In this course you will learn about the role that shame and stigma plays in substance use disorder (disease of addiction) by looking at the effect this has on the individuals, families/caregivers, and communities.

Participants will gain an understanding of the effect stigma has on the individual with substance use disorder and how it creates barriers to getting help through first-hand experiences and situations.

Brian and the Disease of Addiction: Discusses how the brain is affected from substances such as drugs and alcohol. Reviews the cause and risk factors for developing SUD and how through brain neuroplasticity and treatment the brain can change / reset.

ACEs and Trauma in Substance Use Disorder: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and trauma play a large role in substance use disorder. Viewing individuals within the context of their life experiences provides an important lens for recovery.
